Love that approach. Focusing on the process helps me too. I also try to mix up my route or running buddies to break the monotony. Small changes can make a big difference.
I'm a beginner, so I think I need the structure of a plan to stay on track. It helps me to stay motivated and ensures I'm not overdoing it. That being said, I do think it's important to listen to your body and take rest days when needed. Maybe as I get more experienced, I'll be able to wing it more.

For a 10K, I stick to what I know - water and a banana at the start. Keeps it simple. During training, I've tried a few gels but didn't like the stomach discomfort. Experimenting is key, so don't be discouraged. You'll find what works for you. Good luck with your next race!
