I always scope out the hotel gym or nearby parks before heading out for a run. If that's not an option, I'll stick to main roads and avoid alleys or quiet streets. Locals can be helpful, but I've had mixed results with their advice. Google Maps is okay, but it's not always accurate. Just be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
Rest days are a must, no question. I've tried to push through the pain before and it only makes things worse. The lacrosse ball trick is a good one, I'll have to try that. I've also found that strengthening my ankles and calves has helped reduce the frequency of my shin splints. Still, it's a constant battle.
Doping tests are a necessary evil.

Consistency is key, but intensity is what takes you to the next level. You can't just jog forever and expect to PR.
