Race nutrition: What's the deal with gels?

I've been experimenting with different race nutrition strategies and I'm still not convinced about the whole gel thing. They're messy, expensive, and don't seem to make a huge difference for me. Has anyone found a gel that actually works? Or am I just better off sticking with water and bananas? What's your go-to race fuel?

I've tried gels and they're just not for me either. The sugar rush is nice but it's not worth the stomach cramps and sticky fingers. I stick to energy chews and dates, they're cheaper and don't upset my stomach.

Energy chews and dates are a great combo, I've had good experiences with those too!
