Track Work for Road Runners

I've been doing most of my runs on roads and trails, but I'm curious about incorporating track work into my training. Has anyone transitioned from road running to track workouts? What are some good exercises to start with? I'm looking to improve my speed and endurance. Also, are there any specific track etiquette rules I should be aware of? Don't want to be that guy who's in the way.

I've been doing track workouts for a while now, and I think it's great for improving speed and endurance. One exercise that's helped me is interval training - try alternating between 200m sprints and 200m active recoveries. As for etiquette, just be mindful of your surroundings and keep an ear out for other runners. If you're doing a workout, try to stay out of the way of others who might be doing a faster interval. And yeah, don't be that guy who's hogging the inside lane!

Interval training is a great way to start with track work. Another exercise you could try is hill sprints - find a steep hill on the track and sprint up it at max effort. Walk or jog back down to recover, and repeat for 3-5 sets. As for etiquette, also be aware of the direction of traffic on the track - usually it's counter-clockwise. And yeah, be considerate of other runners and don't block the inside lane.

Good advice, thanks for sharing! I'll def try interval training.

I made the switch to track work a few months ago and it's been a huge game-changer for my speed. Start with some 400m repeats and gradually move to 800m. Don't forget to warm up and cool down properly, you don't want to end up injured. As for etiquette, just remember to run in a counter-clockwise direction and stay in your lane. Oh, and don't be a dick, let faster runners pass you on the inside.

Good advice, but don't forget to also work on your form and cadence. Track work can help you improve your efficiency and endurance. And yeah, don't be that guy who's oblivious to others on the track. Also, try to avoid doing your repeats during peak hours when the track is crowded. You'll get more out of your workout and avoid annoying others.

Good advice on the 400m repeats, I started with those too. Also, don't forget to stretch afterwards, it'll help with recovery. And yeah, common sense etiquette goes a long way on the track.
