Trail running newb: how do I not die on roots and rocks?

Just started getting into trail running and I'm shocked by how much I suck at it. How do you guys avoid eating dirt every 5 minutes?

Lift your feet, don't overstride, and slow down. Roots and rocks are less of an issue when you're not trying to blast through the trail like a madman. Practice your footwork on shorter trails before moving to more technical ones.

Good advice! I'd add to focus on your posture too. Keep your center of gravity over your feet and you'll be more stable on uneven terrain. It's all about balance and control.

Practice, patience, and focus on footwork! Start with shorter trails and gradually increase distance/difficulty.

Trail running's a whole different beast, ain't it? Roots and rocks can be tough to navigate. For me, it's all about slowing down and picking my feet up. Try to focus on the trail 10-15 feet ahead and anticipate the obstacles. It's better to take smaller, quicker steps than to try to bound over stuff. And don't be afraid to walk if you need to - it's not a road race, it's about enjoying the trail.

Slowing down and picking up your feet is key. I like to think of it as a dance - you're constantly adjusting your stride and footing to avoid obstacles. And yeah, walking is not a sin on trails. It's better to walk and recover than to risk a nasty fall. Just remember, it takes time to develop that trail sense, so be patient and don't get discouraged.

Great advice! Slowing down and focusing on the trail ahead is key. I also try to keep my weight light on my feet, ready to react to any unexpected obstacles.

Dude, it's all about footwork and focus. You can't zone out on trails like you do on roads. Keep your eyes on the path, lift your knees, and don't be afraid to walk when it gets hairy. And for god's sake, slow down. You're not gonna set any records on technical trails. Just enjoy the scenery and don't be too proud to take a breather.
