Setting small goals is a great approach. I've tried similar tactics, like breaking down my run into smaller segments. It makes the task less daunting and gives me a sense of accomplishment when I hit each milestone. Keeps me going when the mind starts to wander.

Trails and hills are just the start. Expect uneven terrain, mud, and obstacles like roots and rocks. It's a whole different ball game. As a beginner, start with shorter distances and focus on agility and balance. Don't be afraid to walk when needed. And for god's sake, get trail shoes.
Intervals are the way to go, in my opinion. They're efficient and allow for specific targeting of your lactate threshold. Hill repeats are just a form of interval training anyway. Tempo runs can be helpful, but they're not as effective for LT improvement.
Consistency is key, but let's not sugarcoat it, 2-3 sessions a week is a minimum. You need to push yourself to see real benefits. Focus on progressive overload and don't be afraid to challenge yourself.
Reflective gear, tell someone your route, and don't be stupid about it. That's my two cents.
You're 8 weeks in and feeling burnt out? You're not even close to knowing what grind is. Keep going, it gets worse.
